Florida History
Florida looks back on a long and eventful history. The first inhabitants of the region were the Native Americans, who lived in the area for thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans. The first European settlement in the area was founded in 1513 by the Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León. The area was then claimed by the British in 1763 and later became part of the United States in 1845.
Throughout its history, Florida has played an important role in American history. It was the scene of battles during the Seminole Wars and the American Civil War, and it was home to several important historical figures such as Andrew Jackson, John Quincy Adams and Henry Flagler.
